Week 5: Day 1

Great news! I'm on track for one pound per week. Since I started my improved health & fitness journey I've lost a total of 4.5 pounds.

Exercise:
I've still got a headache today and now I'm wondering if it's left-over migraine or a series of cluster headaches caused by perimenopause. Either way, it totally robs me of clear thinking and energy. I made myself go outside today and took the dog for a walk. The cold air actually felt good and for the time I was outdoors I didn't have a headache. But it's back with a vengeance. It'll be another early night tonight.

Eating:
It's hard to eat when you're in bed all day. :) Hmm, maybe I could start a new diet craze...sleep your way to slimness.

Events:
Not much happening (see above). I could tell you of my dreams but I don't want to bore you all. Please pray that my headaches will lift and I can get back to "normal".

Week 4: Day 6

Exercise:
Winter in Canada used to be my least favourite season. However, since I've taken up snowmobiling and snowshoeing I now rate it second to Summer. I had a great snowmobile ride with my husband in the Ganaraska Forest followed by a super snowshoe around my country block. Gotta love Saturdays.

Eating:
Not only is eating 3 large Lindor chocolates followed by 2 chocolate-chip granola bars not good for the waist, it's also not good for the head! The tell-tale sign that I really overindulged this time was when my sight started to go funky and my head started to hurt. Oh no, a migraine! I suppose I deserved it but I'm still paying for my binge as I type this blog.

Events:
It's been a long time since my last migraine. I don't really know what the triggers are. Stress? Probably. Chocolate? Too much of it...yes.
I believe my first migraine came when I was delivering newspapers as a child. I thought it was just a really really bad headache. But it was enough to make me quit my job. I remember another migraine when I was working late on a Friday afternoon and I couldn't see half the resume I was critiquing. I thought I was losing my sight. I ran to my eye-doctor (his office was down the block) and he diagnosed it as a migraine. "Get home now!" he recommended. Since then, I've had them periodically. They are nasty and I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy.

Week 4: Day 5

Exercise:
The locker room at the YMCA was busy but the weight room was empty. I love it when I don't have to wait for a machine and can go through my routine quickly with lots of time left over for a good stretch.

Eating:
A co-worker got me started on eating almonds on my afternoon break. They are nutritious and delicious. I grab a handful at my 3:00 p.m. break when I'm feeling tired and hungry. Hits the spot!

Events:
Over the years, friends have given me little business-card sized notes with pretty pictures and scripture verses. I've kept them all and have a few posted in my office at work...
Trust in God.In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths Proverbs 3:6
Live all the days of your life...one at a time! You do not know what will
happen tomorrow
James 4:14

Week 4: Day 4

Exercise:
Boy did I enjoy my workout on the elliptical machine today. I had a particularly stressful morning at work, and so it was great to sweat it out, and laugh at Corner Gas for 30 minutes.

Eating:
It's one thing to have a meal plan. It's another thing to actually have the groceries in the house for the plan. And it's another thing to make sure that the frozen foods are pulled out of the freezer in advance. Oh well, maybe by February I'll have it down.

Events:
In my Believing God Bible study Beth Moore asks us to wear a blue bracelet. It is to remind us to step up our level of sanctification. This is based on Joshua 3:5-- consecrate yourselves to see amazing things and have faith to believe God. Also in Numbers 15:37-41 blue tassels are used to symbolize remembering the commands of the Lord. By wearing this bracelet, I hope to keep God's commands in mind.

Week 4: Day 3

Exercise:
I had a good session at the Y at lunch, walked the dog this evening, and got in four songs on Dance Central. Good exercise day!

Eating:
One of the best buys out there is a fully cooked chicken you can pick up at mostly all supermarkets. Add a bag of salad and 2-minute brown rice and you've got a great meal in record time at an affordable price.

Events:
I'm excited to start reading Ann Voskamp's new book, One Thousand Gifts. I heard her speak at last year's Write! Canada conference and found her so inspiring. Her written words are beautiful.

Week 4 - Day 2

Exercise:
The deep freeze is over and the milder weather has returned. My dog, Jessie, barked for joy to get back out into the field for her nightly walk. The recent snow fall covered over the trail and so I decided to let Jessie lead. Bad mistake. She didn't follow the old trail but instead followed her nose! She had me walking in a zig-zag pattern across the field. Next time, I'm going first.

Eating:
Tip -- if you decide to make a meal plan ahead of time, it's always a good idea to have the groceries in stock. Three potatoes does not make a mashed potatoe meal for four.

Events:
When stressed at work, I have a few reminders to help me re-focus. On my calendar there is a beautiful photo of what looks like the mountains of Banff with the caption: "Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the
great deep" Psalm 36:6a (NIV), and a magnetic button with the words, "The Lord is near to all who call upon him" Psalm 145:18

Week 4 - Day 1

Wow, where does the time ago? At first, I thought that 15 weeks would be a long time but I'm already into week 4!
Ideally I should be 4 pounds lighter. Unfortunately, I'm only 3.5 pounds. So I've gotta bump up the exercise and take down the eating.

Exercise:
My son, Daniel, has an XBox 360. I've not been too fond of the system until last night. We've got this new game called "Dance Central" that's a controller-free, body tracking, fully immersive dance video game. What fun! If I thought I looked silly in a hi-low aerobic class at the Y, I look absolutely goofy doing these dance moves! So far, my favourite song is Funky Town...reminds me of my younger (more moveable) days.

Eating:
Cosco sells a super veggie tray at an affordable price. It relieves me of the chore of washing, dicing, and slicing. I can just throw a few carrots, snap peas, brocolli, red peppers and little baby tomatoes in a bag. Yummers.

Events:
One thing I like about my job (besides the actual work) is having the opportunity to listen to Life 100.3 (89.3 in Peterborough) radio station. They play only Christian music. Also, they have programs like Focus on the Family at 9:00 a.m. and my favourite at 9:30 -- Walk in the Word with Dr. James MacDonald

Week 3 - Day 6

Exercise:
Today it was extremely frigid weather and so I opted to stay indoors and nap instead. But tonight, I joined my children and over 20 other members of my church for an hour-and-a-half of bowling. What fun! I even managed two strikes in a row.

Eating:
What can I say. I lost my drive to track what I've been eating the last few days. Gotta get back on that wagon again!

Events:
In my Believing God Bible study, we are to record "GodStops" -- a feature provided for us to record places where we see God at work. Obviously I saw (and am seeing) God at work in the recovery of my daughter after her toboggan accident. But I also have seen Him at work in "smaller" things too. Like at my job when I needed to find the source of a donation and I was able to find it with no hassle given the degree of difficulty of the task. And when I went to buy a suitcase for my upcoming trip and the store marked it 70% off! It's eye-opening to see God at work once you open your eyes.

Week 3: Day 5

I am sorry that I missed writing last night but I have a good excuse...I was at the hospital with my daughter. Apparently while tobogganing with the youth group she overshot the snowbank and landed on her head on the road. We got the call that she couldn't move. Talk about a parent's nightmare! After a trip to the hospital, x-rays and an extensive examination she was released with only pulled muscles and ligaments. We are elated that she had no broken bones, concussion or spinal and back injuries. We believe it is because of our church family's prayers.

Exercise:
Yesterday I watched M*A*S*H while on the elliptical trainer. I walked 1.7 miles in 30 minutes. Not sure if that's good or bad, but it felt good so I'm glad.

Eating:
Ever heard of stress eating? I can really pack it in!

Events:
See above. But I also wanted to mention a happy event. On Wednesday night, I made a decision to set my alarm 30-minutes earlier and spend time in God's word. I have never done this in my entire life. Honestly, I have trouble getting out of bed at my regular hour. But I wanted to step it up abit for God. Thursday morning I awoke at 6 a.m. and sat at the dining room table with a hot coffee and a Good Book. I liked it! I plan to make this a more regular habit.

Week 3 - Day 3

Exercise:
Nothing beats a neck massage by my daughter, Kristen. Especially after a long day on the computer, a workout of dips and chinups, and an evening meeting. She wants to get paid for her efforts. I think it's worth it!

Eating:
It's way too easy to pop a chocolate chip cookie in my mouth without even realizing that I'm doing it. Mindless eating? I've got it covered. It seems like I have to be super vigilant in watching what I bring to my mouth.

Events:
We booked a family vacation! Yahoo. It's not for some time so this gives me added incentive to eat healthy and exercise so that I will feel and look great on the beach.

Week 3: Day 2

Exercise:
Believe it or not, walking the dog for 15-minutes in the slush and sticky snow makes for a good workout. It's very wet snow and slogging through it wearing big snowmobile boots really adds to the heart pumping!

Eating:
I made up an eating plan for the month of January for Monday through Thursday dinners. This allows the kids to know what to start for supper during the week when both my husband and I are working. It relieves the stress of me wondering what's for dinner and grabbing something not-so-healthy instead.

Events:
I started the Believing God study last Thursday night but am ashamed to say that I haven't started the homework yet. eep. With kid's homework, my own homework from French lessons, and general fatigue in the evenings I find it hard to sit down and work on it. I'll try to commit (at the very least) 10-minutes per night.

Week 3 - Day One

Great news, I lost another pound! So far, I've stayed on track to lose one pound per week.

Exercise:
It's a love-hate relationship I have with the Total Core workshop leader at the Y. She drives us hard for 30-minutes using a ball and light weights. If you thought the plank was hard you gotta try her lunch hour torture! I'm hoping that I'll get rid of this "keg" and replace it with a nice "6-pack".

Eating:
I planned my day ahead of time and came very close to hitting the right amount of Weight Watcher's points. It's tough but I think veggies (0 points) are the way for me to feel full without tipping the scale.

Events:
I led my workshop, "The Call to Care for our Bodies" at my church tonight. What a super group of ladies. We had a lot of fun and learned stuff too.

Our day outdoors

My daughter, Kristen, and I embarked on a snow shoe adventure.

Me at the top of the hill (we only looked down, didn't actually go down it)

Kristen taking a break

We followed a trail (fox, coyote, wolf?) for awhile before it veered deep into the woods
The bright sun and blowing wind created beautiful scenery

Me going full stride
We live in such a gorgeous country
How can anyone doubt the existance of God with all the beauty that surrounds us!

Days like today are what make winter in Canada tolerable, and even desirable.

Week 2 Day 6

Exercise:
Lots and lots of snow makes for good exercise! I spent time snowblowing and then shoveling the driveway. Then, after that I enjoyed the snow further by snowshoing around the neighbourhood. A good 75 minute walk!

Eating:
Ever have breakfast for dinner? I just love it. I had a Saturday night tub and then my husband, Bob, made me an omelet. I did well all day, but it's when I relax at night that I wanna munch. Why are there oreo cookies in my cupboard?!

Events:
I stayed up late last night finishing the book, Me, Myself & Bob. It's all about the saga of VeggieTales. From top of the charts to bankruptcy. Fascinating story with some excellent lessons. I highly recommend it.

Friday the 14th

Exercise:
Worked my inner/outer thighs, then used the row machine and pull-down for my back muscles and finished with fly machine for my chest. I love a quick workout that targets most of the body.

Eating:
"Pizza and movie" Friday has been a family tradition since my teenagers were little ones. I can't kick that habit!
But on the flip side, I have continued my fast of icecream. I must say that I have not had any icecream this month...and the temptation has been bad some nights. Instead, I say a prayer asking God to reveal His will for my writing career.

Events:
Exciting news! I've got one of my devotionals set up as an e-book to sell through Smashwords. No matter what type of system you use (Kobo, Sony reader, Kindle, PDF etc) you can now download my Where Fitness Meets Faith Devotional for only $2.99

Week 2 - Day 4

Exercise:
I love the mini tv's that are attached to each cardio machine at the Y. I brought my ear-phones today and plugged 'em in to watch Corner Gas while I pumped my arms and legs on the elliptical machine. Watching a sitcom while exercising makes it so much more enjoyable. I did get some looks though, when I laughed out loud a few times.

Eating:
What can I say, I was hungry....I not only ate my lunch at 10:30 a.m., but I made my husband (who works in the same building by the way) surrender his lunch to me too. I sure hope this wave of hunger is just PMS!

Events:
I attended my first Beth Moore Bible Study tonight. I'm very excited about the next 10 sessions. I have 5 days of homework to do, and I'll share with you any tidbits that I think you may find interesting.

Week 2 - Day 3

Exercise:
The good news? I made it to the gym today and had a great full-body workout on the machines.
The bad news? Jessie (my dog) missed her walk again tonight. It's been frigidly cold these past few days. I'm thinking she doesn't really mind.

Eating:
Ever have one of those days where you can eat and eat and eat, and never feel satisfied or full? I used up most of my extra 35 Weight Watchers points and feel like I could still clean out the fridge.

Events:
I felt in better spirits today. Prayer really does work. I asked God to forgive my ungrateful and unsatisfied grumpy mood of yesterday, and renew a new spirit in me. He did. I need to remember to also ask for His infilling when I'm feeling empty.

Week 2 - Day 2

Exercise:
Why is it that after a time of doing very well on my health plan, I then crash and burn? Is it self-sabotage?
Today, although I went to work, I still felt yucky and unmotivated. I didn't go to the gym at lunch because I'm taking French lessons. I didn't take the dog for a walk because it was too cold outside. Truthfully, after work I put on my pj's and terry-cloth robe and plunked myself down on the couch for the evening. blah

Eating:
Do you ever feel like an all or nothing person? Because I felt bad about not doing any exercise today, I overindulged in junk food tonight. It's like a vicious cycle. I give up on everything. If it can't be perfect it might as well be horrible. Not a good attitude. This is definately an area that I need to pray into.

Events:
Taking French lessons once a week is a highlight for me. But the short 1.5 hour lesson wasn't enough to pull me out of my funk. Prayer. I need prayer. Lord, renew in me a new spirit.

Week 2 - Day 1

Week 2: Lost 1.5 pounds! Yahoo. My goal is one pound a week for fifteen weeks. It feels good when my efforts are obviously rewarded.

Exercise:
Today I stayed home from work because of abdominal cramps. I hope I haven't picked up the stomach flu that seems to be going around. However, it was a picture-perfect day to get outdoors for a walk. In the late afternoon, I donned my winter wear and braved the cold temperatures for a walk around the block. I felt much better after this brief trip. Just goes to show you that healthy living is good for more than losing weight.

Eating:
The weekend was a toughie...so many delights. Sunday afternoon I indulged in my Mom's Dutch Beef Croquettes. At about 960 calories each, I filled up on the veggie tray first before smothering mustard on the little bitter ballens and savouring each morsel!

Events:
With women from my church, I will be attending a Bible study called, Believing God by Beth Moore. It's a 10-week interactive study that includes personal, daily assignments and weekly, video-centred group sessions. I'm looking forward to it.

Saturday January 8, 2011 - day 8

Oops, I missed my post yesterday. Can you forgive me? I have good reason...I just plain forgot.

My whole routine got thrown out the window when I returned home. It was Friday night, you know. At my home this means "Pizza & Movie Nite" with the family.

I ate 3 slices of Pizza Hut Canadian za. Yummers. And for dessert, I had their Cinnabun. More yummers.

Instead of a movie we opted to continue watching the Seinfeld DVDs I received for Christmas. From the moment I got home (around 5pm) to bedtime, I sat on my comfy couch, ate pizza & dessert and watched tv. I finally got off my butt and into bed around 10pm. No dog walk, no blog.

I did, however, read my Bible. I've read it daily, using the "Grace for the Moment Daily Bible, New Century Version with Devotional writings by Max Lucado". I highly recommend it.

Today, it's sunny outdoors and I plan to put my snow-shoes on and take a nice hour-long walk around our neighbourhood. I've got piles of laundry to do too, so I think I'm good for cardio today.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. Yesterday while at the YMCA, CHEX television did a segment on exercise. They filmed the Total Core workshop where I was exercising. I'm a movie star!

You can check out my 5 seconds of fame at http://www.chextv.com/News/LN/11-01-07/Gym_Memberships.aspx

If you look closely at 2:09 and again at 2:19 you'll see me. I'm 3rd from the left at the back, with black shorts and a white t-shirt. You'll see my white water bottle beside me. It was a zinger of a workout!

January 6, Day 6

Exercise:
At lunch, I went to the Y and worked out my inner/outer thigh, back and chest. With only an hour break at lunch, I don't have time for a long workout. However, I'm able to hit major muscles in the 30-minutes I have.

Eating:
It's hard to work at a place where co-workers are generous with food. There is always some kind of tempting goody on the kitchen table. I've avoided the lunch room this week because of leftover Christmas candy and chocolates. One employee even brought in donuts! Can you imagine?!

Events:
I'm liking my new tear-away calendar. It's got a new scripture for each day. I'm tempted to memorize but the days go too fast. The first verse was an easy one: John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Day 5 - Wednesday

Exercise:
I made it to the Y just in time to sign up for the Spin class. I've only spun twice before. Once over 15 years ago when I felt like I was going to throw up after the class, and again a few weeks ago. I made it through 25-minutes of what felt like mostly uphill biking....and I didn't throw up! It was a tough go but I felt good afterward.

Eating:
22 points is just not enough to get me through my day! Each time I get to supper I've got less than a handful of points left. I'm going to have to pack on the veggies...low points.

Events:
Pretty uneventful day at work. One of the things I like best about my current job is the chance I have to listen to my favourite radio station. It's Life 100.3 and I love to listen to Focus on the Family at 9:00 a.m. and then James MacDonald (he's Canadian, eh) at 9:30 a.m. Super way to start the day.

January 4th - day 4

Exercise:
Good day today! I got back to the YMCA at lunch and started with a 5-minute cardio warm-up on the treadmill followed by a full body workout on the machines. I particularly like this routine because with only 4 machines, I can hit the majority of my muscles. I use the leg press, chin-up, dip, lower back and abdominal machines. I do 3 sets of 10 reps plus stretches at the end. This gives me enough time to get back to work with one minute to spare.

Eating:
After eating cereal for breakfast, packing a mid-morning snack, lunch and mid-afternoon snack I only had 3 Weight Watchers points left for dinner! yikes. I had to dip into my reserve of 35 extra weekly points to finish my meal.

Events:
Back to work today, and a routine. I like routine although I have to be careful not to fall into a rut. I started my day with a hot shower and the Bible verse, "Today is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it."

Day 3, January 3

Exercise:
The sun came out from behind clouds today, so I donned my winter coat, mitts, hat and ventured outdoors. I enjoyed a full one-hour walk around the block. I didn't take the dog because she's getting too old for that long a walk. However, I did take her through the field to my son's bus stop and back again.

Eating:
Started Weight Watchers program today. It just kills me that a bowl of Honey Nut cereal with milk is 6 points! I only get 22 points in the day and can easily eat them all by noon. The good news is that I've kept to my 22 points without dipping into my reserve. Maybe I should go to bed early.

Events:
Slept in again today...tomorrow I'm back to routine so I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. Sister-in-law and kids came by for a visit. Packed up a bag of clothes to take to St. Vincent de Paul. Early to bed tonight; I'm back to work tomorrow.

Sunday the 2nd

Exercise:
The weather took a wicked turn cold, with a grey sky and flurries. I managed a 10-minute walk with the dog. At least I've kept up my resolution to walk the dog every day -- even if it's a short one.

Eating:
Finally got some food into the cupboards. Holidays, with the kids home all day, has a way to drain the food in this house. I ate Double-Zoots (sp?) at my parent's home, but missed out on the Croquettes. I ate yoghurt for dessert instead of icecream. Going good so far.

Events:
Another slow start to the day, but I made it to church on time. A visit with my daughter to Oma & Opa's home. Watched most of Season 5 of Seinfeld. Still one more day of holidays, then maybe back to a "normal" routine.

01-01-11

Exercise:
It rained all day so I wasn't enthusiastic about going outdoors. I waited until 7:45 pm before venturing out. I walked around our country block with my son and my dog. But after the walk, I took a shovel to the ice at the bottom of the driveway. That was the last remnant of what was a white Christmas. Only ten minutes of scrapping and shoveling and I had built up a good sweat!

Eating:
I've decided to fast icecream for at least a month. I find that I crave it every day after dinner and so instead of indulging in the creamy delight, I plan to pray for God's direction for my writing life.

Events:
I slept in today 'cause I stayed up so late for New Year's last night. I took it easy, watching Seinfeld reruns and taking down the Christmas tree and decorations.

Mighty Manatees by Ramona Furst

Dolphins have often escorted me to open water from the dock on a canal of my friend’s backyard in St. Petersburg Florida. Almost daily they appear on the horizon or better yet, close to my kayak sometimes alone and sometimes in a pod. One day a juvenile came alongside the kayak, skimmed the surface of the water, then moments later disappeared. I have watched schools of mullet fish leap to great heights only to belly flop again.

One Sunday morning, I wondered if God would mind if I played hooky from church. I headed outside. Within minutes the whoosh of air and water-spout of a large dolphin urged me to enjoy God’s creation. I passed the aptly named Bird Island, a well-known tourist spot. It was easy to see pelicans, whooping cranes, egrets, hawks, to name but a few of the birds that perched on every tree and shrub of this island. Paddling on, I kayaked under a bridge and headed into a large bay. I saw a young woman on a “S.U.B.” (Stand Up Board) who looked in my direction and said, “Can you see the manatees?” For the next two hours my new acquaintance and I watched six manatees swim alongside, around and under us.

A very large sea cow poked its nose out of the water and snorted in my scent, then prodded the end of my kayak with its snout. As it rolled onto its back, the manatee kept eyeing me. Then this gentle giant flipped its tail, twisted, turned around, then sank out of sight.

My congregational meeting, of sorts, reached a holy moment when we realized that one of the manatees had given birth. Dumbfounded and awed by the privilege of such a rare opportunity, we watched as cow and calf floated and swam in the middle of the pod. The infant calf seemed glued to its parent. Then it rose closer to the surface, while the mother distanced herself, waited a moment, then proceeded to move in under the baby.

Not to be out done, a juvenile swam out of the pod towards us; the youngster blew bubbles and snorted. It rolled onto its back and wiggled its paddle-like flippers looking as if it wanted a belly rub!

Church ended, the congregants disbanded. Awed and overwhelmed by the beauty and design of God’s creation, I said my good-byes and pointed the kayak towards home.

O LORD, our LORD, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth. (Psalm 8:1)
