Name: Susan Barclay
Age: is just a number!
Where you live: Kitchener, ON
1. What activities do you enjoy most in winter?
Besides snuggling up to a warm fire with a hot chocolate (no whipping cream) and a good book, I enjoy the occasional skate or toboggan ride with my kids and almost daily walks with Leslie Sansone via DVD. Then there’s all that snow that needs shovelling – as good a workout as any (176 calories per half hour as opposed to 146 for walking)! Gee, looking at those numbers makes me think I need more exercise!
2. What equipment is a “must” at this time of year?
Exercise DVDs and a DVD player! An elliptical machine or treadmill, if you prefer.
3. How do you feel about New Year Resolutions?
I prefer to think in terms of goals that have measurable objectives. Resolutions tend to be fuzzy.
4. What was the best resolution you’ve ever made?
I call it the “be healthy” goal, which has a few components, including eating well (fewer carbohydrates, more fruits and veggies), drinking more water, getting more exercise, carving out more “me time”, and deepening my prayer life. I made positive strides last year with most of those, and am getting better at prayer. The Kneeling Christian, written anonymously before 1930, is a great little classic on that subject.
5. What was the worst resolution you’ve ever made?
Honestly, I can’t remember, but I bet it was a doozy!
6. How do you manage to keep up your resolution into the summer?
I usually write my goals and objectives down at the beginning of the year so I have something to refer to as the year progresses. How well I do in a year depends on how committed I actually am to the goals I’ve set for myself. I like this quote attributed to Vance Havner: “The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps - we must step up the stairs.”
7. Do you share your resolutions with anyone?
The first Saturday morning in January, my husband and I, along with our two children, go out for breakfast. We all come armed with a list of our goals and share them over the table. My husband and I help our children formulate action steps to help them reach their goals. While this all sounds wonderful in theory, I’m pretty sure the kids don’t look at them again for the rest of the year! They’re only 11 and 13 though; hopefully they will take more interest in goal-setting as they get older.
8. Do you record your resolutions anywhere?
Yes, as per the above. I just read, though, that prolific author, Debbie Macomber, uses Zig Ziglar’s Performance Planner, and I’m considering that method for myself.
9. What top 3 health tips do you have to manage in this holiday season?
Well, the holiday season is over now, but these are the three tips I would offer: enjoy seasonal goodies in moderation; prepare a snack or lunch to take with you when you go shopping, so you won’t be stuck with unhealthy food court choices at the mall; and maintain your usual exercise program.
Thanks, Susan! Great quote from Vance Havner….sounds something like one of my favourites, “walk the talk”.
