Dear Father -- I pray You watch over my husband, my children, and myself today. Bring us all back to health. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Today, I tended to a little sick boy and in doing so I was able to tend to myself as well. When he took a nap, I took a nap. When he took medicine, I took medicine. And we took the day pretty easy. Sometimes it's nice to be reminded to treat ourselves well.
When was the last time you treated yourself well?
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV.)
Wk 8 - Day 1 Winter baseball
Dear Lord --I need You. I am desperate without You. You are my Rock and my Redeemer. Let me feel You with me today. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Winter can be fun...I had a great game of baseball with my son. It started rather innocently; I was shoveling the front walkway and my 8-year old winged me with a snowball. The snow was perfect for making round balls and he sent another my way. I quickly lifted the shovel and caught the ball in the air with the back of the head. It sprayed everywhere! Well, the boy thought this a delight and so continued to fire ball after ball at me. I must say that I was batting pretty good; the head of the shovel is much better than any aluminum bat.
What fun sport have you made up?
The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him (Nahum 1:7 NIV.)

Week 7 - In Review
By far, the worst week ever! I'm afraid to step on the scale because I'm sure that NyQuil, Tylenol, Halls throat losanges, and all the I-don't-feel-good-so-I'll-eat-more-icecream meals don't sit well with the goal of health. Sleep, sleep and more sleep added to my lethargic enthusiasm and opposition to get out and move my body. Add to that the fact that I was in pain -- which makes for a grumpy Kim -- it was not a good week.
At church today, I approached the altar and prayed for a full healing; spiritually and physically. I find that when I am ill physically it spills over into all areas of my life. I did not read my Bible this week, did not attend my Bible study, and only half-heartedly did my prayers.
I am praying that this week, I will rise out of the valley and be once again able to dance on the moutaintop!

Wk 7 - Day 5 Party Gal, Not
Dear Father -- I am starting to feel better today, but I still need You to fill me with strength, energy and vitality. Lord, I can do nothing without You. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Somedays I am just happy to get through the day! This was one of those days. I had to teach two seminars and sit in on one lecture. I had two meetings with students, a quiz to mark and groceries to buy for a shower that I am hosting. I thank God for Tylenol! The kids and I all fell into bed at 9:00 p.m. No parties Friday night for this gal.
Do you ever feel like you are just moving through your day on autopilot?
Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor My covenant of peace be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you (Isaiah 54:10 NIV.)

Wk 7 - Day 4 Thanks Mom
Dear Lord -- I need You very much today. When I am sick, I feel very low and grumpy. Please fill me with Your peace. In Jesus' name, I pray.
What a treat today. I cancelled all my activities and laid in bed, sleeping in until 11:30 a.m. Then my mom phoned and heard all about my woes of being sick and not being able to do the list of chores I had planned. She immediately hung up the phone, jumped in her car and came to my rescue. She cleaned my home for me! Now I can lay in bed and enjoy the fresh lemon smell of furniture polish. Thanks Mom!
Do you remember a time when someone did something special for you to make you feel better?
You need to perservere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised (Hebrews 10:36 NIV.)

Wk 7 - Day 2 & Day 3
Dear Jesus -- I pray Your Prescence will be made real to me today. Open my heart to feel You. In Your name, I pray.
I am sick. My throat hurts. My chest hurts. My ears hurt. I don't like it. I am grumpy and don't want to write in my blog. Going back to bed now.
The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know Your name will trust in You, for You, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek You (Psalm 9:9-10 NIV.)

Wk 7 - Day 1 Spiritual Face Lift
Dear Lord -- I am feeling sick today with a very sore throat and chest pain. Lord, I pray Your healing touch on my body to bring me back to full health. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Despite my general malaise, I was able to take the dog for a short walk this afternoon and I did teach my aerobics tonight...I just didn't go "full tilt". Actually, I'm glad that I did not cancel because the Bible study after the exercise class helped to lift my spirits.
What helps you to feel better?
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV.)

Week 6 - In Review

Wow, another week gone. Where does the time go? Looking back to my last week, it was full of regular life stuff. Babysitting a neighbour friend's child, evening meetings for a volunteer committee, working out at the Sports & Wellness Centre, teaching at the college, buying groceries, visiting with extended family and attending church.
One thing that I noticed this week was my need for a larger social circle to help me to stay on the right health and fitness track. It's easy to lose balance and lose control. Friends and family help me to remain focussed.
Groups that I belong to: my immediate family (I talk with them daily), Weight Watchers (I attend weekly meetings), my Internet support group (I email them daily), my church family (I visit with them at least 2 times each week), and yes, this blog (I journal every day). Support is the cornerstone of success. No man is an island.
Wk 6 - Day 5 Teacher's Pet
Dear Lord -- I thank You for creating the universe and everything in it, all the way down to the snails that live under the rocks. Help me to never stop appreciating this world You created for us. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Packing a lunch has great merits. Today, I packed 2 pieces of fruit, a cheese string, a low-fat yogourt and a musli pita. I'd consider it a healthy eating day but in my last class (right when the afternoon munchies were hitting) a student brought me a large chocolate chip cookie. This was no normal cookie...it was about the size of a dinner plate. And it was still warm. Bless my student! I ate the cookie before I even packed up my notes for the weekend.
What do you do to curb the afternoon munchies?
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9 NIV.)

Wk 6 - Day 4 Balance beam of life
Dear Father -- As Your daughter, I pray that I will embrace the truth that I am beautiful. I pray that I will remember in my heart that I am a princess. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Good day at the scales today. Despite my horrible, awful, terrible binges I managed to keep my weight in balance with extra work outs. That's what it's all about; finding balance. I need to balance diet and exercise to maintain a healthy outcome.
How do you maintain balance in your day?
The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him (Lamentations 3:25 NIV.)

Wk 6 - Day 3 Energy begets energy
Dear Lord -- I pray that You bless me and my family today. Keep us safe, happy and healthy. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Today, I did not take the dog for a walk because it was freezing rain outdoors. I even had to cancel my early morning class because the truck had not come to sand our roads yet. I did not go to the gym because I wanted to get home before the "bad weather" hit. So today was a no exercise day. And I feel it. I have no energy to do anything this evening and plan to go to bed soon (although it's not even 8 p.m.)
Does life ever sidetrack your plans to exercise?
I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being (Ephesians 3:16 NIV.)

Wk 6 - Day 2 Row, row, row your boat
Dear Jesus -- I pray that You watch over me today. Keep me healthy in spirit and body. In Your name, I pray.
I'm not a fan of water sports and never really enjoyed aqua aerobics. At the cottage, I prefer to lounge on the dock. But at the gym, my chosen piece of equipment is the Rowing Machine. I choose this because it gives me a total body workout. Also, it's a movement that I can't easily copy at home. Using a treadmill seems redundant given the amount I walk, and I like to bike in the great outdoors. I manage about 30 strokes per minute (I have no idea if this is good or not :)) and it's a good warm-up to my strength training.
What's your favourite piece of workout equipment?
And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19 NIV.)

Wk 6 - Day 1 Redeeming Exercise
Dear Lord -- It is a new day, and I pray You will give me a new spirit today to walk in Your will. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Ah, exercise. There is some redemptive value in the pain of squatting 100 times. Today, I could not get enough to eat. If it was within arm's reach, I had it in my mouth. And yet I did not feel full. Gotta love PMS. But tonight, I was allowed to sweat off at least one of those chocolate mint candies with an extra hard run around the room.
What redeeming qualities can you find in exercise?
The Lord is slow to anger and gret in power (Nahum 1:3 NIV.)

Week 5 - In Review
I've been in the health and fitness field for over 10 years and yet I am surprised by how much I continue to learn.I host a discussion group with other like-minded women, called Within Reach Health Group, and love that although I am considered the "expert" the other women are teaching me new stuff every week. They are a great group of women especially during times when I too can become discouraged. Health and fitness is a journey and I am blessed to know that I am not on this road alone.
I've made some changes to this blog...added colour, added a question after my journal entry and have added a few pictures. I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you think about the weekly fit tip? the daily prayer and scripture verse? the questions posed? I'd really like to have this blog more interactive and look forward to "talking" with you!
If you are interested in joining the FREE discussion group, send me an email at withinreach@nexicom.net. Because it is a closed group I can then send you a personal invitation.
Wk 5 - Day 6 Housework Counts
Dear God -- Today I pray that You will be in control of my life. Open my heart to hear Your leading voice. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Living in the country has some added health benefits, in that we must haul our own garbage to the transfer station. So most Saturday mornings my husband and I load up our truck with the household trash and recyclables. It can be quite the chore, especially when you miss two weeks in a row!
What regular routines are you involved with that add to your health?
The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with HIs love, He will rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17 NIV.)

Wk 5 - Day 5 Friday the 13th
Dear Jesus -- I pray You watch over my children at school, my husband at work and myself as I go about my day today. Keep a hedge of protection around us at all times. In Your name, I pray.
Friday, the 13th. It was a long day. I taught a seminar, attended a lecture, taught a second seminar and then attended a meeting. It makes for a long day. Once home, I was tired and that can be very dangerous when it comes to eating. I gulped down half a pizza (a lower-fat, healthier version) and ate 3 chocolate macaroons (again, lower-fat version) but then stopped myself from returning to the cupboards and instead locked myself in my bedroom to relax and read.
What triggers your binges?
Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are the one I praise (Jeremiah 17:14 NIV.)

Wk 5 - Day 4 Unpleasant Surprise
Dear Father -- I pray that my focus will remain on You today and tonight. I thank You for all that You do for me. In Jesus' name, I pray.
I started out my day with a great breakfast of cereal and milk. Then I went to my meeting and met my mom to do some shopping. We stopped at Tim Horton's to have a coffee but because I was so hungry I decided to buy a healthy sandwich. I ordered the Garden Vegetable sandwich with a diet coke. It was delicious. But I discovered (much to my dismay) that it was loaded with 23 grams of fat! 11 points by Weight Watchers. I wish I had figured it out BEFORE I ate it.
Have you ever eaten a food, thinking it was healthy, only to find out later that it was the worst choice to make?
This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you (2 Kings 20:5 NIV.)

Wk 5 - Day 3 DOMS woes
Dear Lord -- Please watch over my friends and family as we travel today. The weather calls for freezing rain, and I pray safety for all on the roads. In Jesus' name, I pray.
It's definately DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness. The activities of the past few days have caught up with me fully today as every move I make reminds me of muscles I didn't even know I had. I am scheduled to return to the gym tomorrow, eep.
Have you ever suffered from DOMS?
Who is a God like You, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us: You will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:18-19 NIV.)

Wk 5 - Day 2 Screaming Legs
Dear Father -- Watch over me and my family today. Keep us healthy, happy and safe. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Today, I can definately feel my legs! My inner thighs are achy, my glutes are screaming, my quads are tense. Last night, I taught my first fitness class of the year with lots of squats. Then today, I joined the Sports & Wellness Centre and did a workout on the equipment where I leg pressed 320 pounds. Ouch. Some weeks I am completely motivated and enthusiastic about exercise but then I can get out of control.
Have you ever overdone it with exercise?

Wk 5 - Day 1 George Foreman rules
Dear Lord -- This is a new day, in a new week, in a new year. I pray that my focus will be on You and how I can be a better worshipper. In Jesus' name, I pray.
For dinner tonight I decided to grill skinless, boneless chicken breast on our new (Christmas gift) George Foreman grill. It was tasty! I added green beans -- bought them in a bag from the grocery store and microwaved for 5 minutes. Yummy. And some noodles. Some days I feel like God really knew what He was doing when He created taste buds!
What Christmas gifts did you receive (or buy) that add to your healthy lifestyle?
For the Lord your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which He confirmed to them by oath (Deuteronomy 4:31 NIV.)

Week 4 - In Review

Well, it's certainly been interesting writing this blog every day. But I find it kinda lonely. I was hoping for more interaction with readers.
I've added the feature of a new fit tip every week. I'd like to see comments about this.
Maybe I'll introduce a question after my journal entry. I'd love to get feedback.
In my book, Fit for Faith, I pose a question after the journal entry for reader's to write their own journal entry. This would be more interactive.
Yes, in 2006 I'd like to hear from other people! What do you think?
Wk 4 - Day 6 Let it snow...
Dear Jesus -- I pray that I will be fully aware of Your presence all day today in everything that I do. In Your name, I pray.
There's just something about Saturdays that I love! Maybe it's lingering memories of early days when I could sleep in and play all day. Today, I slept in. And yes, I played all day. Just sort of puttered around the house. I took the dog for a walk in the snow after lunch and again tonight. My husband and son joined me in my night walk and I was bombarded by snowballs!
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9 NIV.)

Wk 4 - Day 5 Let the Sun Shine In
Dear Lord -- I pray that with the sunshine today, I will be motivated to complete the many tasks on my to-do list. In Jesus' name, I pray.
"....Face it with a grin." And I did face the sun today. I took the dog for a walk in the field to enjoy the sun sparkle off the crisp snow. Then I found a sheltered spot in the woods and lay down with my daughter. We looked up through the bare trees to the robin-egg blue sky and enjoyed the first sunny day in a very long time.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28 NIV.)

Wk 4 - Day 4 A tip for the Waitress
Dear Lord -- I pray You help me to "stay the course" today. Give me renewed enthusiasm to do Your will. In Jesus' name, I pray.
Today was a full day of appointments and running around. Although I didn't have opportunity to exercise, I was mindful of what I was eating. Also, my daughter wanted to play "restaurant" and prepared me a wonderful salad for supper tonight. She earned herself a hefty tip.
I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil -- this is the gift of God (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 NIV.)

Wk 4 - Day 3 Rain Rain Go Away
Dear Lord -- Today it is rainy and blah outside. I pray that Your very presence will make me feel sunshiny on the inside. In Jesus' name, I pray.
What a dark and dreary day. However, I was able to get outdoors with the girls and the dog for a little walk while the rain was just a drizzle. Then, later in the afternoon, I did quite a bit of walking, shopping for presents and grocery shopping. Mall walking is great at any age!
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away (Revelation 21:4 NIV.)

Wk 4 - Day 2 It's getting better all the time
Dear Lord -- I need help! I need energy to move my body, I need enthusiasm to choose healthy foods, I need Your guidance to do what needs to be done around my home. In Jesus' name, I pray.
I have a melody in my mind today..."It's getting better all the time..." My daughter and her girlfriend treated me to a homemade salad with celery, carrot, red pepper, tomatoe and cucumber. Then they made me a fruit salad of plums, kiwi, apple, pear and banana. Yummy. I forgot how much I love these healthy foods! I had to tip them of course. :)
And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast (1 Peter 5:10 NIV.)

W4 - Day 1 Feed a Cold?
Dear Jesus -- I pray for the strength and energy and enthusiasm to move my body today. I want to start the New Year on the "right foot". In Your name, I pray.
Well, I was able to get outside tonight for the first time. I made it to the busstop with the dog, but it was a challenge. This cold (or is it the flu?) has taken its toll on me physically. And then when I returned, I vegged infront of the television and ate everything in the kitchen cupboards. Now I have a belly ache on top of my headache. Will I ever learn?
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10 NIV.)

Week 3 - In Review

This was certainly an interesting week! I celebrated Christmas dinner with my entire family -- all 18 of us. I brought a healthy spinach salad (that I love) and ate hors d'oevres that I truly wanted, instead of just eating it because it was there.
I spent Boxing Day with my husband and two children, hanging around the house with no agenda.
Tuesday, 27th I was interviewed by ChristianCurrent and Faith FM about health and fitness. It was exciting to share my message with "the world".
On Wednesday, we attended the funeral of a wonderful woman. She was 90 years old and her passing will leave a hole in many lives.
Thursday we had a house full of visitors...my brother, his wife and child, and my parents. Friday we did the same with my husband's sister and child, and his parents. Then later that afternoon we had my other brother, his wife and 3 children over for a visit.
Family means a lot to me and I am happy to celebrate this joyous season with them.
All day Saturday I was laid up in bed, sick as dog.
Today, I am feeling better but don't have any plans. I missed church (which I don't like to do) but I really wasn't up to going and I didn't want to spread my germs.
This week I did no exercise. I miss it! I resolve to get back to walking and playing outdoors next week.
